What are Your Forbidden Foods?

Q: What happens when we forbid ourselves from eating certain foods?

A:Forbidding certain foods is a common practice in the world of dieting. Anytime we forbid something, it just adds to the allure and we often want it more. This usually has to do with taking away our autonomous decision-making capacity. It's like being a rebellious teenager and being told you "can't" do something you want to do- and you do it anyway. With food, forbidding and depriving is often a pathway to bingeing on forbidden foods.

Some first steps are to:

  • Make a list of all of you "off limits" or "forbidden" foods.

  • What rules do you have about these foods?

  • What are your fears about these foods?

  • What are you afraid might happen if you eat one of these foods?

Often our first steps are bringing awareness to our rules, thoughts, and fears. Once we do, we can start to see our rules and fears for what they are- rules and fears!
