Healing Negative Body Image: Journal Activity #2

This post is the second in a series of journaling activities to get you started on the process of healing negative body image. In part 1 we identified self-limiting beliefs about ourselves that keep us from beginning the process of healing. The journal activity below is designed to help you identify your unlimiting beliefs so you can respond to your self-limiting beliefs that are keeping you stuck.

Journal Activity #2- Responding to My Self Limiting Beliefs

Grab the sheet of paper, diary, journal, or open the notes page on your smartphone with the list of your limiting beliefs.

  • Right next to each limiting belief write the opposite of that limiting belief. For example, if one of your common limiting beliefs is “I’ll never love my body,” you would write next to it “I can learn how to love my body.”

  • Don’t worry about full sentences, punctuation, or spelling.

  • Carry your list with you everywhere (or have access to it when you need it). It’s normal to have limiting beliefs throughout the day. When you hear one of your limiting beliefs, use the list. Say “stop” and say the unlimiting belief. This is an example of thought-stopping and reframing.

  • Consistent practice is needed to stop and reframe your limiting beliefs. It’s normal to find the activity exhausting at first. Over time, your self-limiting thoughts will become less frequent as your unlimiting beliefs become the norm.

Remember that our limiting beliefs are often interpreted as facts. This activity will help you challenge and reframe these thoughts!
