Eating with Joy in the New Year Tip#3- Variety

My third top tip for eating with joy in the new year is………

Variety! The most satisfying meals are often the ones that have a variety of flavors, textures, colors, temperatures, and aromas. Think about how good a steaming bowl of chili is topped with a dollop sour cream, fiery jalapeños, a sprinkle of cheddar cheese & chives, and served with a warm, buttery piece of cornbread. YUM!! While not all of our meals are going to be gourmet feasts, we can still be intentional about choosing a few different flavors, textures, colors, etc. for our meals and snacks. Consider starting the new year by trying new recipes, new foods, and new flavors. Practice using your senses to guide you and consider asking yourself "what would satisfy me?" 

Here are a few ways to invite more variety into your eating:

  • Subscribe to a meal kit service like Hello Fresh or Blue Apron. These services are a great way to try new recipes and flavors. The meals are balanced and include carbs/grains, protein, and fat (even the vegetarian dishes). Bonus- the kits are delivered right to your front door!!

  • Subscribe to the Bon Appetit You Tube channel. I’ve had a few clients recommend this free channel as a source of inspiration for cooking.

  • Try a new restaurant or type of cuisine in the next few weeks. Discover unique tastes in your neighborhood or city! Food trucks or food halls are growing in popularity and are great places to try to flavors or dishes.
