I can hardly believe the start of the holiday season is upon us, can you? This year has certainly presented us with a unique set of challenges, and the upcoming holiday season will be no exception. If you're having mixed feelings about the holidays, I hear you and I see you (and I'm with you!).

If you're working on healing your relationship with food, the holidays can be an extra challenging time. Fear about holiday food and drink, anxiety about gatherings (whatever that will look like for you this year), feeling overwhelmed by your "to-do" list, and grieving the loss of loved ones and/or traditions are a few examples of why the holidays can be a challenging time. One way to approach challenges is as opportunities; opportunities to experiment, to learn, and to grow. I believe strongly in the power of words. What we say to ourselves and how we say it matter! Affirmations, or emotionally supportive and encouraging words, are very helpful during stressful and challenging times.

Here are several of my favorite affirmations for the upcoming holiday season. Repeat these affirmations to yourself whenever you need to!

  • Today brings new opportunities and gifts. I'm excited to discover what this day will bring.

  • I am worthy of love and acceptance.

  • I choose to create and continue holiday traditions that are meaningful to me.

  • I have permission to eat foods that I enjoy, and that bring me pleasure.

  • When I'm feeling stressed it's okay for me to take a break and rest.

  • I'm in charge of myself, and not in control of other people.

  • I can choose to accept or decline any invitation.

  • Eating past fullness is part of being an eater. The discomfort of fullness will pass.

  • Today I will prioritize my recovery. I'm worthy of recovery.
