Instead of New Years Resolutions- What About a New Years Theme?

2020 will be upon us in 16 days!! The new year is a great time for reflection and planning for the months ahead. It’s also the time for stories about new years resolutions. New years resolutions have never resonated with me for a variety of reasons: they’re often about “fixing” deficits, they’re lofty or unattainable, or just unrealistic. Most new years resolutions revolve around weight loss and exercise goals. The main method of reaching these goals always involves limiting or restricting yourself in some way (less food, less self-care time).

Instead of resolutions this year, I’m considering framing the year around a value-based theme. Freedom is an important value to me (freedom to be who I am, eat what I want, do what I want, etc.). I want my theme this year to be “permission” - - I will have permission to: be who I am, take up space, express my opinion, attend to my needs, ask for what I need, eat/wear/do what feels good, etc.

I challenge you to consider a theme for yourself this year. What do you really value? Is there a theme that describes an important value in your life that you want to attend to?

Wishing you a wonderful 2020!!
